Is Your Self-Reflection Killing Your Faith? – Theo Heartsill 2019
Is Your Self-Reflection Killing Your Faith?
Do you love God with all your heart? So much and to the point that you want to make sure there’ absolutely nothing in your heart that would hurt or offend him? Do you spend countless hours in self-reflection, self-analysis, examining and repenting of all your mistakes over and over and end up being extremely self-critical?
Has someone ever complimented you and you reply with something like this? “I’m not perfect, and I’ve got plenty of things wrong with me. You may not see it, but I know all the things, and thoughts I struggle with.”
Yes, we need to examine ourselves and keep our hearts pure. Yes, we need to offer forgiveness to those who have wronged us, and to make things right to those we have wronged. But can this be taken to extremes?
Can you get to the place that you spend most of your prayer time repenting of all the things you think are wrong with you? Are you beating yourself up for what you’ve done wrong, looking at all your short-comings and failures, and thinking you’re nothing but a failure?
If you are – you may not realize that you are not walking in faith that your sins are forgiven and Jesus’ blood is greater than your mistakes. Left uncorrected – you may spend so much time in repentance of everything “wrong” with you to the point you can’t even have a relationship with the God you’re repenting to.
